Affiliate Marketing – Where to Find the Best Merchants
We all know that affiliate marketing is becoming increasingly popular, and more and more people are jumping into the fray. With all this new competition, the need to seek out the best merchants with the hottest selling products has never been greater. The right mix of products can make your affiliate profits soar, while placing your weight behind a bunch of worthless products will simply be a waste of your valuable time.
From the merchant’s perspective, the most valuable part of affiliate marketing is that no payment is made to the affiliate unless results are seen. Of course from the affiliates point of view this means that finding the right merchant, and the right products to promote, is vital to the survival of their business.
The largest and most successful ecommerce sites, such as Amazon.com, run their own affiliate programs, but other lesser known internet merchants use third party sources. There are a number of these third party resources which allow affiliates and merchants to find each other. Some of the most popular include cj.com, linkshare.com and clixgalore.com.
For the budding affiliate, it is important to understand how affiliated programs work from the merchant’s side of the equation. Merchants who are thinking about implementing an affiliate strategy for their online sales will often first look at the technological innovations which are available to them. Some of these recent technological innovations include special affiliate software, hosted services, third party affiliate networks and shopping cart services with affiliate features built in.
Affiliate programs got somewhat of a black eye during the early days of the internet, when over anxious affiliates used spam email methods to promote their affiliated merchants. These days, however, the most successful affiliates prohibit the use of spam and instead use opt in lists of subscribers to market the products they find.
When looking for a product for which to act as an affiliate, it is best to start with a product you know well. For instance, if you are an avid fisherman, why not start with products you already use. Begin by approaching the online merchants of some of your favorite fishing products.
Taking this approach has several important advantages. First of all, you are an expert in the area where you will be acting as an affiliate. Potential customers react strongly to the availability of expert advice, and your conversion rates are likely to rise if you can provide real world, practical advice to those who are just learning about a subject you already know well.
Secondly, focusing on a product you know well will make learning the affiliate procedure a lot easier. After you have learned how the system works with familiar products, you will better be able to branch off into products you know less about.
Of course, you should not limit your affiliate relationships to products you already know. The best way to seek out products in the all important niche markets is to use an affiliate network like linkshare.com, cj.com or clixgalore.com. These affiliate networks are excellent resources for both the beginning and experienced affiliate marketer.

7) VIRAL MARKETING: word of mouth - or word of mouse - is also a
form of leverage because other people are doing your marketing
for you. Free dating site www.plentyoffish.com, for example, uses
other people to create its content and do much of its marketing.
(In future newsletters I'll describe in more detail some of these
ways of getting leverage.)
8) I've left the most effective form of affiliate leverage to
last...
Create your own affiliate sales force and have hundreds or
thousands of affiliates promoting your product for you.
Anik Singal of Affiliate Classroom says: "There are companies on
the Internet who do over $300 million in revenue a year and over
$100 million of that comes from this ONE marketing technique."
MarketingSherpa estimates that affiliate marketers will make over
$6.5 billion in commissions in 2006.

6) TRAFFIC: You don't have time to create all the traffic you
need, so it makes sense to tap into other people's traffic. Look
for ways to get your site mentioned on other people's sites in
your niche, and in popular newsletters.
Ways to tap into other people's traffic include writing articles
for other sites, submitting tips to sites and newsletters, making
posts on forums, and perhaps buying links.
Some serious affiliates do research carefully and write really
good, exclusive articles, a different one for each target site.
They make sure the topic they choose hasn't been covered already.
This takes time and effort but the benefits can last for years.
Does this sound like too much work? You can outsource this task.

4) KNOWLEDGE: On the fast-changing Internet, it's impossible to
do all the necessary testing and experimenting yourself, so we
harness other other people's knowledge by buying information. A
modestly priced ebook which teaches you how to earn thousands of
dollars is a classic example.
Another way to harness other people's knowledge is to interview
experts and publish the interviews on your site - or sell them.
5) TOOLS: Just as farmers progressed to using tractors and
combine harvesters, super affiliates have progressed to using
sophisticated tools to speed up the creation of websites and
blogs.
As the Internet becomes more clogged with junk, for long-term
success, the "trick" is to use labor-saving tools intelligently,
to create sites which are genuinely useful, add value to the
Internet, and will still be here years from now.

3) LABOUR: You can use other people's labour by outsourcing tasks.
Some affiliates are prepared to spend several days - or even
weeks - struggling to learn how to do a little bit of programming
when they could have gone to Rentacoder or Scriptlance and hired
a programmer to do the job for $20. Outsourcing tasks allows you
to concentrate on doing the things you enjoy and the things you
do best.
Outsourcing also gets things done faster, allowing you to reach
your goals faster.
Buying private label rights (PLR) articles is another form of
applying leverage. It would be impossible to write all the
articles yourself that you can get by joining a few PLR
membership sites. You can also outsource the rewriting of those
articles.
Encouraging user-generated content is another way of applying
leverage. Your website visitors can create content in various
ways, such as forums, tips, recipes, vacation ideas, photos,
videos, reviews and classified ads.
Publishing RSS feeds is another way of harnessing other people's
labor.

2) TIME: You can leverage your time by using content you create
more than once.
For example, you can write articles for distribution on other
websites AND use those articles in a mini-course. This way, your
articles keep working for you, over and over again.
You can gather a collection of articles you've written and re-use
them in an ebook.
Putting your articles in a brandable ebook and getting other
people to give away the book is another effective way of using
leverage.
Even the act of creating a blog or website applies leverage
because you write each article once but it continues
working for you, attracting visitors to your site, for years.
Publishing a newsletter gives you leverage because you use those
email addresses over and over again, every time you publish your
newsletter.
If you simply send traffic directly to the affiliate merchant,
you're doing things backwards. Instead of using leverage, you're
helping the merchant leverage your time and skills.

How to use leverage to ramp up your affiliate marketing.
Eight ways to apply affiliate leverage ...saving the best one for last
=========================================
Leverage is all about using a little bit of energy to accomplish a lot.
It means harnessing other people's time, energy, skills and resources to multiply your efforts.
Leverage is all about working smarter instead of harder.
Big businesses use leverage all the time. As an affiliate - or an affiliate merchant - you can, too.
How many of the following types of affiliate leverage are you using?
1) MONEY: In business, using other people's money - borrowing - is one of the most common forms of applying leverage. In affiliate marketing, if you're broke and in a hurry, you can use a credit card to buy your first marketing manual. I wouldn't usually recommend this. If you're desperate for cash, you can probably mow lawns or wash windows or give up a luxury so you can save for your first purchase.

Affiliate Programs.
I recently came across this web-site, http://www.5staraffiliateprograms.com and I thought it would be a good reference site for anyone who is new.
Top affiliate programs are listed and reviewed, so you can pick and choose the one that will pays more or you're more comfortable with. For example, The TradePub.com Affiliate Program pays a commission for every qualified FREE magazine subscription you generate from your site.

So, to summarize, there are two main steps for reaching affiliate gold.
1. Build a site whereby your visitors are already planning on joining something or making a purchase before they ever visit your site (ie make your site a normal step on the path towards completing the transaction).
2. Get your site to the top of the search engines, possibly by cross promoting with a popular free content site.

Affiliate Gold - Part V
Before you try to make an affiliate site like this you need to research your keywords and the competition. You should first of all figure out which terms related to your product are searched the most. For instance which is searched for more often, "Digital Camera Deals," or "Digital Camera Sales." Once you find the most popular set of keywords for your product (the keywords you will use to link to your affiliate page) then you need to find out the current competition for those words. So do a search on Google for those words and check the PageRank of the first site to come up. If your Overall PageRank Power is greater than the PageRank of the current #1 site then you will likely have the #1 spot if you make this affiliate site and cross-promote it with your current site. This is especially true considering that 100% of your incoming links will be using your keywords for the anchor text (afterall, you will have complete control over that) and for your competitors this isn't likely to be the case. Using your Overall PageRank Score in calculations like this is a good way to decide when to create a new site, and also to predict how successful that site will be.

Affiliate Gold - Part IV
Now you shouldn't just link from any site to your affiliate site. Off topic links made specifically to increase rank are frowned upon by search engines and may result in negative action taken upon you. This is why you build an on topic site to link from, there is nothing wrong with cross promoting two on topic sites.
Sure, building an entire site, or maybe two or three sites, just to promote an affiliate program does seem like a lot of work. However the payoff can be huge. Imagine how much you'd make if you ranked #1 for "Viagra?" Additionally your affiliate site need not be only one page, nor need it be a separate site, you could promote it as a subsection of your content site just as easily.

Affiliate Gold - Part III
So you make a small site selling a single product, or group of products, via an affiliate program, that's the easy part. The hard part is getting it to the top of the search engines. If you think back to the chapter on search engines you'll remember that to get to the top you need incoming links, right? But then, who would want to link to your small affiliate site? Well, you will.
You can build a content site related to the product you are selling. You don't even need to put advertising on this site, as your sole purpose with this site is to gain incoming links. People link to free content, directories list free content, you can offer free content and get a large page rank. Then, using your knowledge of search engines and link popularity, you link from your content site to your affiliate site.
If you can get ranked #1 on the search engines for the product you are trying to sell, you've struck affiliate gold and you will make very good money.

Affiliate Gold (Part II)
Reviews are not the only way to do this though. You can also make a site that sells anything via an affiliate program. The site can even be one page with only a few paragraphs of content and a link to a place to buy the product. The real trick here is not in making the site, it is in promoting the site.
An example of a photography site, lets pretend Ray makes a page that gives a brief overview of Digital Camera's and then includes prices on popular models from leading e-tailers, like Amazon.com and Buy.com, in the appropriate affiliate fashion. He might earn some money from it, but not all of Ray's visitors are interested in digital cameras, or are interested in buying a camera at all. However, now imagine that this page is #1 on Google when you search for "digital cameras." Ray will likely get thousands of visitors to that page each month, visitors who are looking for digital cameras.
There is no greater partnership than that between an e-commerce site and a content site. A site that offers photography information, and a site that sells photographic equipment, would be a perfect match. However running an e-commerce site is complicated, and often requires a large investment to setup inventory. So for the small guy the best partnership is a content site and an affiliate site.

Affiliate Gold (Part 1)
By: Chris Beasley, Published: 2003-04-24
The advice here can help you make money on affiliate programs, maybe even as much as a few thousand a month. But what about people who make six figures off of affiliate programs? What's their secret?
Well, I call that Affiliate Gold, and really it's a very simple principle: Build a site around an affiliate program. The easiest way to do this is have a review site. For instance lets say you make a site where you review all of the online dating websites, and each review is an affiliate link. So basically every visitor comes to your site looking for information on which program to sign up with, and every time someone signs up you make money. Chances are 90% or more of your visitors are going to signup with someone, that's why they're at your site in the first place.

How to select a profitable product or service to promote?
Because your income is directly tied to how well the selected product or service sells, and the size of the commission that you will earn, it's important to choose carefully when it comes to choosing an affiliate merchant to partner with.
Choose programs that you're not embarrassed to promote and that you would feel comfortable recommending to family and friends if you were asked.
You will do better if you promote things that you understand and are familiar with. That way you will be able to write better ads without having to strain yourself trying to come up with good things to say.
Only promote products and services for companies who have gone through the trouble to provide you with a training program and sales aids like banners, sample classified ads, and other marketing materials that you can either use directly or model yours after.
Look for programs with commission rates of no less than 50%. Give preference to programs that pay commissions on multiple levels. That means that you will also earn commissions on sales made by people who buy the product through your link and then go on to become an affiliate themselves.
Google the company and the product to see if the company has a good reputation and to see how many affiliate ads are already out there. If the competition is too stiff, find a different product to promote.
Once you have your product just write your ads and start promoting. Remember – NO SPAMMING!
Good luck and hope that you make a lot of money!

Useful web-sites to explore.
Let’s break from the theory of affiliate marketing, and let’s us look at some sites which you can join and be affiliate with.
1.
Amazon– they are probably one the biggest online stores, and they have plans to sell groceries online too.
If your web-site has anything to do with books or CDs, this will be a good start. You can be affiliate with them and earn money when your visitors buy from them.
2. Another great site is LinkShare, as you can see from the banner on the right. They have hundreds of merchants under them and you can pick and choose the right category for your affiliate.
Example of some of the merchants under LinkShare as you can see on the right are:-
a. McAfee anti-virus
b. Magazine.com
c. SecondSpin.com , buying and selling of CDs…..and many more.
3. PayDotCom another great site, very similar to LinkShare.
There will be more sites, published in this blog, so come back or subscribe to my newsletter.

So let’s start off with a quote
“Being a great affiliate is NOT about selling... It’s about PREselling”
1. Maximizing Profit
The goal of any business, including your affiliate business, is to maximize PROFITS.
As an affiliate, there are exactly two ways to increase your INCOME (i.e., the amount of money your business makes).
1) Refer more visitors to the merchants that you represent.
2) Increase the Conversion Rate (i.e., the percent of visitors that you refer to your merchant… visitors who deliver the response for which the merchant pays, whether that’s a sale, or a lead, etc.).
For example: Simple formula, right? If you refer 100 visitors per day to a merchant and 1% buy, you get paid for that one purchase. But if you send 1,000 visitors per day and 3% buy, you get paid for 30 purchases.
Yes, thirty times more! So it’s pretty clear how to maximize affiliate INCOME!
In order to maximize income, we need to build traffic to the merchant web-site. SO how much will these cost us? Let us look at the following:-
1. What does it cost to build traffic to your merchants’ sites?
Traffic-building, no matter how you cut it, will cost you... in terms of both time and money. Spending dollars is optional, but spending time is not.
Build your own Theme-Based Content Site -- one that is loaded with high info value Keyword-Focused Content Pages that rank well with the Search Engines and that get the click through to your merchants’ sites.
Let’s break that down for closer examination. For your affiliate Web site to generate targeted traffic to your merchants, it must do two things well...
1) Rank well at the Search Engines so that it pulls in lots of targeted traffic. So far, though, that traffic is still on your site. Therefore, it’s not generating income yet. Your visitors are just “looking around.” So...
2) Get those visitors to click through to your merchants. (Some affiliate program models can actually place merchant offerings on your Web site. In this case, your traffic does not actually visit your merchant’s site. But you still have to “get the click” to generate income.) It makes sense, of course, that a Web site is the way to go.
2. What does it cost to maximize Conversion Rates?
Good news! Maximizing your Conversion Rate (CR) is simply a question of doing things right. There is no extra dollar or time cost to boosting Conversion Rates at your merchants’ sites.
Your primary goals are...
1) Maximize targeted traffic to your merchants, spending only dollars and time that maximize profits.
2) Maximize Conversion Rates. Do things right (no expense). Don’t do just one. Do both. Why? Because, as you saw above, your payment is determined by traffic multiplied by the Conversion Rate... not “added.” Your profits grow geometrically when you concentrate on maximizing both traffic and Conversion Rates.
As I reviewed many of these affiliate sites (those who are getting sales but have CRs under 2%), I realized that almost half were basically one big sales letter.
Which means that these affiliates are SELLING (with sales copy) when they should be PRE-selling (with great, and related, content that is of value to the reader).
There’s really not much point in straight selling off your site -- that's what your merchant’s site needs to do. Picture this...
A visitor arrives at an affiliate’s site that is really just one, big sales site. Yes, I know that the words are sincere. But put yourself in these visitors’ shoes for a moment. They don’t see inspiring, editorial content. They see a sales effort.
Instead, warm your visitor up for your merchants by PRE-selling them with great content that they values and respects. They’ll click-through with pleasure, arriving at your merchants’ sites in an open-to-buy mindset.
It’s your PRE-selling effort that will boost your traffic-to-merchants and Conversion Rate, which in turn maximizes your income.

Hi, welcome to Affiliate marketing for Dummies.
Have you wonder how Internet Marketers are making money through Affiliate programs? Yes, believe me, some of them are making tons of money through this programs, and not having their own product.
So what is an affliate program?
Imagine in the conventional business, you have the salesman selling "A" company product. He gets a commission when he made a sale.
But in a digital world, your web-site is the salesman and when you direct a buyer to merchant web-site and he made a purchase, you get a commission from the sale.
Sounds simple? Well it's damn simple. Anyone can do it!
So why do we have affiliate programs?
Affiliate programs are one of the ways Internet traffic is achieved. Instead of merchant's advertising their products or services, they will allow other web-sites to promote and send buyer to their sites.
This is called leverage and if you're a network marketer, you'll know this is a very powerful way to market your product.
There are many forms of programs; it can be commission being paid once for a one time purchase or a recurring commission as in a subscription base program.
Here, I’ll go through some steps, which are useful for maximizing profits.
So stay tune for more….
